1919 - Babe Ruth, then of the Boston Red Sox, sets season homer mark of 28 off of none other than Yankees pitcher Bob Shawkey.
1927 - The NHL's Toronto St. Patricks become the Maple Leafs.
1930 - Portsmouth beats Brooklyn in the first NFL game played under floodlights.
1931 - Round-robin playoff among NYC's three major league teams, to raise money for the unemployed, concludes with Brooklyn losing to both the Giants & Yankees.
1934 - Only 2,500 fans see Babe Ruth's farewell Yankee appearance at Yankee Stadium.
1946 - The Yankees set season attendance record as 2,309,029 come through the gates, besting the 1929 Cubs.
1957 - The Brooklyn Dodgers play their last game at Ebbets Field, defeating the Pirates 2-0.
1971 - The Houston Astros beat the San Diego Padres, 2-1, in 21 innings.
1977 - Ken Hinton of the CFL British Columbia Lions returns a punt 130 yards.
1985 - Expos Andre Dawson joins only Willie McCovey to hit 2 HRs in an inning twice.
