THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY - SEPTEMBER 11TH

1918 - The Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs, 4 games to 2 in the 15th World Series.
1923 - After a single, Red Sox Howard Ehmke retire the next 27 Yankee batters.
1926 - In Philadelphia, USA beats France, 4-1, in the 21st Davis Cup to capture their seventh straight title.
1928 - Ty Cobb bats for the final time in his career as he pops out against the Yankees.
1959 - Baltimore Oriole Jerry Walker pitches 16 innings beating the Chicago White Sox 1-0.
1976 - After a 12 year hiatus, Minnie Minoso bats for the White Sox and goes hitless.
1982 - Chris Every wins her 6th and final US Open tennis match at West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, NY.
1983 - Franco Harris, of the Pittsburgh Steelers, becomes only the third professional football player to rush for over 11,000 yards in a career.
1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds gets career hit 4,192 off of Eric Show of the San Diego Padres, eclipsing Ty Cobb's record.
1991 - The Atlanta Braves Kent Merker, Mark Wohlers & Alejandro Pena pitch the first combined no-hitter in NL history, beating the San Diego Padres, 1-0.
