THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY - SEPTEMBER 19TH

1879 - Thomas Ray becomes the youngest to break a track & field record pole-vaulting 11' 2.5" at age 17 years and 198 days.
1901 - 11 major league baseball games were canceled due to the funeral of President William McKinley.
1931 - Lefty Grove wins his 300th game of his career defeating the Chicago White Sox, 2-1.
1947 - Jackie Robinson is names the "Rookie of the Year".
1955 - Chicago Cubs slugger Ernie Banks hits his 5th grand slam of the season.
1968 - Denny McLain collects his 31st win of the season on the same day that Mickey Mantle slams his 535th HR of his career.
1973 - The National League refuses the San Diego Padres to move to Washington D.C.
1986 - Chicago White Sox Joe Crowley no-hits California Angels, 7-1.
1995 - Ken Caminiti switch hits HRs in the third of four games.
2000 - Ken Griffey Jr. pinch hits his 400th HR of his career.  The first major leaguer to hit this mark as a pinch-hitter.
