1845 - First baseball team, New York Knickerbockers organize, adopt rule code.
1939 - Cookie Lavagetto goes 6 for 6 as the Dodgers collect 27 hits and beat the Phillies 22-4.
1952 - Rocky Marciano KOs Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th Round for the Heavyweight boxing title.
1970 - Gary Muhrcke wins the first New York Marathon.
1983 - Philadelphia Phillies Steve Carlton is the 16th major league player to collect 300 career wins defeating the St. Louis Cardinals.
1984 - San Francisco 49ers Joe Montana misses his first start in 49 games.
1988 - Rosa Mota wins only the second female Olympic marathon with a time of 2:25:39.
1989 - The Toronto Blue Jays bat out of order against the Milwaukee Brewers in the 6th inning of their game.
1992 - First female to play in a NHL exhibition game, goalie Manon Rheaume, for the Tampa Bay Lightening gives up 2 goals in 9 attempts in one period.
1997 - The Seattle Mariners break the record for the most HRs in a season, 258.
