Cincinnati & Washington are Playoff Bound

With a 3-game sweep over the Chicago Cubs including their 5-3 victory this afternoon the Cincinnati Reds become the first team to clinch a 2012 postseason berth.  Manager Dusty Baker was missing for the second straight game after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.  Ace Johnny Cueto and the NL Central leaders ensured themselves of at least a wild-card spot.  Cincinnati cuts its magic number to two for winning the division for the second time in three years.

The Washington Nationals brought postseason baseball back to the capital for the first time since 1933, clinching a playoff spot Thursday night with a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ross Detwiller's six dominant innings, an opportunistic offense and three innings of shutdown relief in front of 30,359 exalted fans witnessed the event.  The Nationals ensured at least an NL wild-card spot with the win while their magic number to win the NL East was reduced to eight.
