1920 - Chicago grand jury convenes to investigate charges that 8 White Sox players conspired to fix the 1919 World Series.
1927 - Gene Tunney defeats Jack Dempsey in 10 rounds in the famous "long count" fight for the Heavyweight boxing title.
1935 - Boston Braves lose NL record 110th game of the year en route to a total of 115.
1945 - Stan Musial gets 5 hits off 5 pitchers on 5 consecutive pitches.
1954 - Brooklyn Dodgers Karl Spooner strikes out 15 New York Giants in his 1st career game.
1969 - San Francisco Giants Willie Mays , becomes only the second player in major league history to hit 600 home runs.
1985 - St. Louis Cardinals set an unusual streak record by winning 9 of 10 games, each pitched by a different man.
