The results of Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith’s MRI on Tuesday showed no structural damage to his left knee, league sources told The Vertical.
Smith, 31, is expected to be day-to-day.
Smith, who was injured in the first quarter of Monday’s win over Toronto, is averaging 7.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 16 games this season, but is shooting just 31.1 percent from the floor and 32.7 percent from three-point range. He has recently dealt with soreness in the knee.
Smith’s negotiations with the Cavaliers on a new contract extended into the preseason, but he signed a four-year, $57 million contract Oct. 15 and avoided missing the start of the season.
Smith played a critical role in the Cavaliers’ 2016 championship run, serving as the starting shooting guard and providing defense and three-point shooting.
In his 13th NBA season – and third with the Cavs – Smith has averaged 13.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He is a career 37.4 percent three-point shooter.
