Oakland Raiders were cruising along on Saturday, leading the Indianapolis Colts 33-14, and suddenly that didn’t matter at all.
Quarterback Derek Carr was suddenly on the field, grabbing his right leg and screaming in pain. He was sacked in the fourth quarter with the Raiders up big, motioned for the athletic trainers, then was yelling in pain. He was helped off the field and couldn’t put any weight on the leg.
After the Raiders defeated the Colts, Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio delivered the grim news:
Jack Del Rio said Derek Carr broke his fibula. Surgery tomorrow. Out indefinitely.— Jimmy Durkin (@Jimmy_Durkin) December 25, 2016
It appeared Carr said, “it’s broken,” as he was down on the field. CBS reported that Carr’s shoe was cut off on the trainer’s table, then he was carted back to the locker room.
On the play, pass rusher Trent Cole hit Carr, whose right foot got stuck in the turf. Carr’s body spun around with Cole landing on him.
Cameras caught Raiders owner Mark Davis voicing his displeasure of the play. You can try reading his lips.
Carr has been the driving force for the Raiders, who are 12-3. Carr had 25 touchdowns and six interceptions this season, heading into Saturday’s game. Oakland is in first place, but the 10-4 Kansas City Chiefs are right behind them and own the tiebreaker.
Last week the Raiders clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2002. But the good vibes from this season faded away in a hurry when their quarterback was being helped off the field.
