Ken Rosenthal reports that free agent shortstop Jimmy Rollins has signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants.
Rollins, 38, signed a minor league deal with the White Sox for the 2016 season but hit a disappointing .221/.295/.329 over 166 plate appearances. He was released in June and didn’t play for the rest of the year. We last saw him working for TBS, doing some playoff TV.
It’s doubtful that, at this point, Rollins has much if anything left in the tank. He can probably approximate some decent-looking infield play, but he was overmatched at the plate last season and bat speed does not improve with age. Still, there’s no harm in giving him a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
