The national panic can end: You’re able to get NFL jerseys with “Harambe” on the back again.
After the devastating news on Wednesday that the NFL had put “Harambe” on its list of banned words for customized jerseys, it turns out it was all a big mistake.
ESPN’s Darren Rovell said that the name of the gorilla who was killed at the Cincinnati Zoo this year and later became a popular internet meme was put on the banned list by Major League Baseball, after an official with an MLB team was worried fans were buying jerseys with “Harambe” on the back. Fanatics, who does online retail for all four major sports leagues, proactively put “Harambe” on the banned list for the NFL too. And that’s how we ended up with this weird story.
But now, if you really want to get that authentic NFL jersey with “Harambe” on the back, go ahead. It’s allowed again.
