Usually, talented players in their prime get second, third and fourth chances by NFL teams, no matter what has happened to them off the field. So it was telling that Greg Hardy was never signed this offseason.
Hardy, who had a domestic violence arrest and NFL suspension in 2014 and was reportedly a disruption in the Dallas Cowboys locker room in 2015, barely drew any attention as a free agent this offseason.
Whatever small chance Hardy had at getting another shot might be gone after he was arrested for drug possession. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Hardy was arrested Sunday in Richardson, Texas for “possession of a Group 1 controlled substance.” TMZ reported that Hardy was pulled over on a routine traffic stop and police found him in possession of less than a gram of cocaine. The NBC affiliate in Dallas also confirmed Hardy was arrested for possession of a controlled substance from penalty group 1.
Hardy is only 28 years old and a very good pass rusher, a position that is always at a premium in the NFL. But nobody would sign him this offseason, and his arrest might close the door on his NFL career.
