Jim Grobe has said some head-scratching things during his time as Baylor’s acting head coach, but what he said Monday may top them all.
Former Bears defensive lineman Shawn Oakman was spotted in the stands during the team’s win over Rice in Houston on Friday night. Oakman, who was indicted for felony sexual assault in July, also was in the Baylor locker room after the game.
Grobe, who replaced Art Briles (who was also at the Rice game) after an investigation into the school’s handling of sexual assault accusations, said he doesn’t know who Oakman is.
Really.
Oakman, who is is 6-foot-9 and 275 pounds, was an All-American during his time at Baylor but went undrafted after he was accused of rape in April.
Here he is at Friday’s game:
Even though Grobe was not at Baylor during Oakman’s career, you’d think Grobe would get briefed in some way about a former player coming into the locker room — especially one who has been charged with sexual assault.
Beyond that, with all that has gone on with that program (which Grobe should have a pretty thorough understanding of), shouldn’t somebody have the common sense to say it’s probably not the best idea to invite Oakman in the locker room? Baylor and common sense don’t seem to be two things joined at the hip these days.
