Terrible news for the Houston Texans: according to a league source, All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt is headed to injured reserve and is expected to be out for the season.
Watt underwent back surgery in mid-July, just days before the Texans opened training camp. He rushed his rehab and was on the field for the season opener less than two months later. Watt started the first three games of the season for Houston, but it was obvious that he wasn’t back to 100 percent.
Last Thursday night against the New England Patriots, he was virtually erased from the game; he was credited with two tackles and zero quarterback hits.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, citing sources, said the Texans believe Watt was injured against New England, and the team is trying to get more information on his the severity of his back injury.
A three-time Defensive Player of the Year and four-time Pro Bowler, Watt has never before missed a game in his career. He has totaled 76 sacks in just 83 career games.
