1789 – The United States Department of War first establishes a regular army with a strength of several hundred men.

1899 – László Bíró, Hungarian-Argentinian journalist and inventor, invented the ballpoint pen (d. 1985) is born.
1907 – The cornerstone is laid at Washington National Cathedral in the U.S. capital.
1913 – Rudolf Diesel, German engineer, invented the diesel engine (b. 1858) dies.
1915 – Vincent DeDomenico, American businessman, founded the Napa Valley Wine Train (d. 2007) is born.
