HOT RUMOR OF THE DAY: Free-agent pitcher Tyson Ross, who was surprisingly cut loose by the San Diego Padres, has a number of teams interested, but most notably, he met with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers on Wednesday, according to our own Jeff Passan.
Source: Before visiting the Texas Rangers today, Tyson Ross met with the Chicago Cubs. They are the two favorites to sign the right-hander.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 5, 2017
ALSO: The Washington Nationals are interested in Ross too, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, but they’re considered longshots at this point. Of note: Ross’ younger brother Joe pitches for the Nats. [@Ken_Rosenthal]
NO-ROD: Many thought A-Rod would attempt a comeback in 2017, but that’s not the case, per his reps. Realizing retirement is better than baseball … or just not getting any interest? [The Stew]
DONE DEAL: The Blue Jays have added pitcher Gavin Floyd on a minor-league deal. Floyd, 33, pitched for the Jays last year, but a shoulder injury ended his season in June. [Yahoo Sports]
R.I.P.: Longtime Cubs scout Stan Zielinski died suddenly Thursday morning. He’d been a scout for 38 years and had been with the Cubs since 2001. Most notably, he helped the Cubs draft and sign Kyle Schwarber. Zielinski was 64. [MLB.com]
My condolences go out to the Zielinski family. Stan was the scout who drafted me. Baseball lost a great person.— Kyle Schwarber (@kschwarb12) January 5, 2017
STEPPING BACK, BACK, BACK, BACK, BACK: Chris Berman is taking on a new, reduced role at ESPN after the NFL season. This mostly applies to the network’s football coverage, but he won’t be the voice of baseball’s Home Run Derby anymore either. [Shutdown Corner]
