Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov will miss the remainder of the National Hockey League season, undergoing hip surgery to repair a groin injury, the team announced Thursday.
The 28-year-old Russian was sidelined twice with groin injuries this season, limiting him to only 24 games. He has not played since surrendering five goals on 26 shots in Colorado's 6-4 loss to Chicago on January 27.
Varlamov was a Vezina Trophy finalist for the NHL's top goaltending award in 2014 and signed a five-year contract extension worth $29.5 million.
But he finishes with a 6-17 record in the 2016-17 campaign and career-worsts of a 3.38 goals-against average and 89.8 save percentage.
Calvin Pickard, 24, and Spencer Martin, a 21-year-old who made his NHL debut last Saturday, will backstop the Avalanche for the remainder of the season.
The Avalanche, early season contenders, have dropped seven games in a row and 24 of the past 28 with only 13 wins in 46 games and a league-low 28 points.
