With Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison all listed as questionable for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, the Green Bay Packers have decided to promote rookie receiver Max McCaffrey from the practice squad to provide an emergency option at the position.
A spot on the 53-man roster opened when the Packers put offensive lineman J.C. Tretter on injured reserve with a knee injury.
McCaffrey, the son of former Denver Broncos receiver Ed McCaffrey and the brother of Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, signed to the Packers practice squad in late December.
Undrafted out of Duke, McCaffrey has never played in a regular-season or postseason NFL game. He saw action in two preseason games with the Oakland Raiders back in August but failed to record a reception.
Ideally, the Packers wouldn’t need McCaffrey on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. But Green Bay had little other choice but to add a safeguard at receiver, especially with the Packers not knowing if Nelson (ribs), Adams (ankle) or Allison (hamstring) will be able to play.
However, a league source told Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Nelson, Adams and Allison are expected to be “available.”
In a worst case scenario, McCaffrey would serve as the No. 4 receiver – behind Randall Cobb, Jeff Janis and Trevor Davis – if the Packers don’t have the three injured receivers on Sunday.
McCaffrey will wear No. 13 for the Packers.
