A little over a year ago, Steve Rushin of Sports Illustrated wrote about Hall of Famer Rod Carew’s health crisis. Following a massive heart attack that likely would’ve killed many, and following open heart surgery and the implantation of a mechanical ventricular assist device, Carew was placed on the heart transplant list.
Many more people are placed on that last than eventually receive transplants, of course. Some die before a donor can be found. Some are unable to regain enough health and strength to be able to withstand the operation. While many who get transplants can and do continue to lead healthy and productive lives afterward, getting to that point can be daunting.
Rod Carew, however, has gotten to that point. KCAL-TV reports that a donor has been found for him, and that overnight he and his wife traveled to Los Angeles where he will undergo the transplant today:
