While Cleveland fans will be clamoring for a quarterback, the Browns are eyeing Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett as their pick at the top of the 2017 NFL Draft, ESPN reports.
Cleveland is 0-12 before Sunday’s home game against Cincinnati, but since the 49ers are 1-11, the Browns are not a lock to get the No. 1 overall pick.
The organization, though, has an “astronomical grade" on and is “enamored” with Garrett, a source tells ESPN.
News of the Browns’ fascination with Garrett is not exactly a surprise. Multiple mock drafts have Cleveland taking Garrett No. 1 overall.
"Cleveland may consider a quarterback at the top spot, but Garrett is the easily the best prospect in the class," Sporting News writes.
Heavy.com adds, “Garrett has the size and speed NFL teams covet. Once we get closer to the draft, these attributes will win out over a talented player like Allen."
While the Browns have Garrett penciled in at the top of their wish list, the team is “doing its due diligence in scouting quarterbacks," ESPN reports. For example, Browns scout Lake Dawson, a former wide receiver at Notre Dame, has extensively studied Fighting Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer this season.
The Browns may also trade for a quarterback, with the Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo rumored to be a potential target.
Cleveland has rights to two first-round picks in 2017, thanks to the trade made before the 2016 Draft with the Philadelphia Eagles (Philly took Carson Wentz with the pick they acquired in the deal). That gives the Browns plenty of leverage to maneuver next spring. Whether they turn that leverage into winning talent is a different matter.
