Credit where it's due, the Tampa Bay Rays have taken several notable steps to honor the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando.
Earlier this week, we learned the Rays were dedicating Friday's Pride Night at Tropicana Field to the victims of the attack. The team also announced that all remaining tickets as of Tuesday would be sold for $5 each, with all proceeds going to the Pulse Victim Fund. We've since learned that Friday's game drew the highest attendance at Tropicana Field since 2006.
One couldn't ask the Rays to do more, but they've decided to take their show of respect and unity one step further by bringing back the old Orlando Rays hats during Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants.
As noted in Roger Mooney's tweet, the Orlando Rays served as Tampa Bay's Double-A affiliate from 1999-2003, before changing affiliates to the Montgomery Biscuits.
That's not all though. As DRays Bay notes, the hats will also be used to raise funds for the Pulse Victim Fund.
The caps will be autographed and auctioned off, starting on Monday, June 20, at raysbaseball.com/auction, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Pulse Victims Fund.
In addition, all proceeds from tonight's game will likewise benefit the Fund. After the tragedy, tickets for tonight's Pride Night game were dropped to $5 and all processing fees were waived.
The demand for tickets was so high, the Rays have removed the tarps from the spare seats in the upper deck, which is normally reserved for events like the World Series. The game is a sell-out of the highest order.
Major League Baseball has also announced a $100,000 donation to the fund as the league continues banding together in support of Orlando and the LGBT community.
Our hats are off to all for their kindness.
