So the United States men's national team will indeed face Argentina in Tuesday's semifinal of the Copa America Centenario. The Argentines saw to that in a comfortable 4-1 win over Cinderella team Venezuela on Saturday.
The Vinotinto had managed to survive a murderous group containing two favorites in Mexico and Uruguay – relegating the latter to an early exit and humiliation – and brought an emotional reprieve to a country in deep economic crisis. But a pair of early goals by Gonzalo Higuain, another by Erik Lamela and two assists and a goal by Lionel Messi were far too much for them to contend with.
Messi's goal was his 54th for his country, just a few days ahead of his 29th birthday. That tied him with the great Gabriel Batistuta, whom they called Batigol, for his nation's all-time record.
