The Boston Red Sox, the best offense in baseball, are adding All-Star starters like they're putting up runs on the scoreboard.
In the latest voting update released Tuesday, Mookie Betts joined David Ortiz, Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. as Red Sox players in line to start the All-Star game. Betts jumped over Baltimore's Mark Trumbo and Kansas City's Lorenzo Cain to take the third American League outfield spot behind Bradley Jr. and Mike Trout.
The Red Sox's four starters would match the Royals' total from last season, which if you remember caused quite a stir at the time. Kansas City has two players leading the way at their respective positions this year, catcher Salvador Perez and first baseman Eric Hosmer, while Orioles third baseman Manny Machado and Astros second baseman Jose Altuve would round out the starting lineup if voting ended today.
While Betts has made up ground over the last few weeks and is deserving of the honor – his 61 runs scored are tops in the major leagues and his 88 hits are fourth – his place is still no slam dunk. Trumbo and Cain are within about 30,000 votes while Jose Bautista, who's made six straight All-Star appearances, lurks close to 100,000 votes back from there.
Balloting ends June 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET, though, so Betts and Boston can feel good about where they are in the race with the clock winding down.
