The Orlando Magic made an aggressive bid to persuade Chauncey Billups to join Frank Vogel’s coaching staff as the top assistant, but Billups has declined the offer, league sources told The Vertical.
The Magic were prepared to make Billups one of the NBA’s highest-paid assistant coaches, an opportunity to which Billups gave serious consideration before deciding to stay in his role as a network television analyst, league sources said.
Billups has designs on a front-office career and could decide to make the leap in the future.
Billups, 39, was a five-time NBA All-Star and the MVP of the 2004 NBA Finals with the Detroit Pistons.
Vogel had wanted to retain Adrian Griffin as his top assistant coach, but he accepted an offer with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Magic are in advanced talks with Minnesota Timberwolves assistant David Adelman for a spot on Vogel’s staff, league sources said. Along with Bryan Gates (Sacramento Kings), Adelman is one of the holdover coaches in Minnesota leaving with the arrival of Tom Thibodeau’s regime there.
