The fall of the villain can make for great entertainment. Darth Vader and the destruction of the Death Star. The poisoning of the evil King Joffrey. Wile E. Coyote getting duped into running off a cliff over and over.
In world soccer, everyone's favorite bad guy is Cristiano Ronaldo. And on Saturday, the people who aren't fans of the polarizing Real Madrid star got to revel in his misfortune in a most forgettable game for him and his Portugal national team.
The moment that got Ronaldo trending on Twitter came in the 79th minute of a crucial Euro 2016 match against fellow underperforming Group F side Austria on Saturday. After getting taken down in the box by center back Martin Hinteregger, Ronaldo stepped up to take the spot kick to finally put the Portuguese in front. He had opportunities to score throughout, but this clearly would be his best chance of the night. A successful penalty also would've made history, making Ronaldo the first player to score in four straight European Championships.
With Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer diving the wrong way, Ronaldo drove his penalty to the left at a gaping goal. The ball crashed off the post. And the CR7 haters celebrated like they had just won the Euros.
