The New York Knicks are acquiring Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose in a five-player trade, league sources told The Vertical.
The Bulls are also sending forward Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick to New York for center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant, sources said.
New York, which had been exploring the trade market for a high-end point guard, and Chicago had been deliberating for days on a trade centering on Rose and Lopez.
Rose, 27, leaves the Bulls after a decorated yet checkered run. He was the No. 1 overall pick out of Memphis in 2008 for his hometown franchise and had swift success. He was the league MVP in 2011 and a three-time All-Star, and helped carry the organization into contention. In 2010-11, Rose led the Bulls to the Eastern Conference finals with a 62-20 record under Tom Thibodeau.
Rose has had multiple knee injuries since 2011, derailing a career that had once seemed Hall of Fame-bound.
Rose averaged 16.4 points, 4.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds in 66 games last season.
For the Knicks, they're free to pursue two more Bulls in free agency to fortify the frontcourt: Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol. Gasol has a strong relationship with Knicks president Phil Jackson, with whom Gasol won two titles as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. The arrival of Lopez – partnered with Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic – will likely end the tenures of Noah and Gasol in Chicago. Another possible free-agent target for the Knicks: center Dwight Howard.
