Retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is set to replace Jerry Colangelo as the chairman of USA Basketball, league sources told The Vertical.
The USA Basketball board of directors will approve Dempsey’s candidacy at a Nov. 14 meeting.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver hired Dempsey as a consultant in October 2015, and he has served as the chairman of the Junior NBA Leadership Council.
Colangelo will continue as managing director of the senior men’s national team and plans to work through the 2020 Olympics with new national team coach Gregg Popovich.
Colangelo served eight years as USA Basketball chairman and started as managing director of the men’s national team in 2005. Under Colangelo, the men’s national team has gone 88-1, winning Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
As chairman of USA Basketball, Dempsey’s focus will be on the business and relationships of the broad-based national team programs, including cultivating relationships within the NBA and NCAA. At the time of Dempsey’s appointment under Silver, the NBA commissioner called him “one of our country’s most respected leaders, as well as a brilliant strategist.”
One of the central focuses of the new chairman’s job will be the development of youth basketball players across the country, sources told The Vertical. Grassroots basketball has become an increasing focus of USA Basketball, which has tried to build programs focused on fundamentals for young players.
