No. 2 Ohio State beats No. 3 Michigan 30-27 in double overtime

No. 2 Ohio State took down No. 3 Michigan 30-27 in double overtime, denying the Wolverines a chance at the Big Ten championship game and likely a College Football Playoff berth.

Michigan settled for a 36-yard field goal to start the second overtime. But Ohio State got the win via a 15-yard touchdown run by Curtis Samuel.

The play came immediately after a close fourth-down conversion by quarterback J.T. Barrett on fourth and short. Barrett ran into the back of a blocker right at the Michigan 15 as he was tackled. The spot — which was reviewed — put the ball directly on the 15, giving the Buckeyes just enough for the first down. And the eventual win that dropped Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to the turf.

Ohio State does not control its own fate in the Big Ten East, however. If Penn State beats Michigan State later Saturday, the Nittany Lions go to the Big Ten Championship Game to face Wisconsin. But if Ohio State is left out, it’s probably sitting in a great position for the playoff at 11-1.

The Buckeyes scored two plays into the first overtime as Barrett waltzed into the end zone. Michigan scored on fourth and goal from the 5 to tie the game as Amara Darboh made a great sliding catch in the back of the end zone.

Ohio State sent the game to overtime with a 23-yard field goal by Tyler Durbin with a second left. It was Durbin’s first made FG of the game. He missed his prior two attempts, including a 20-yarder from the left hash earlier in the fourth quarter.

The Buckeyes stayed in the game on the strength of the defense. Defensive back Malik Hooker scored OSU’s first TD of the game on a pick-six of Michigan QB Wilton Speight. A second interception of Speight set up the second TD as the Buckeyes needed to go just 13 yards to get to the end zone.

Michigan dominated the first half thanks to a fantastic performance from the defensive line. But as Ohio State’s defense tightened in the second half, the Buckeyes offense got back into the game with an accelerated tempo accompanying the legs of Barrett, who had 30 carries for 125 yards.
