Conor McGregor has vacated his featherweight title, a move necessitated by the UFC’s need to fill the main event slot at UFC 206 in Toronto after an injury forced light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to pull out of his bout with Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, FoxSports.com has reported.
By knocking out Eddie Alvarez earlier this month at UFC 205 in New York, McGregor claimed the lightweight title and became the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time. That lightweight title, however, is the only one he holds now.
Jose Aldo, who McGregor knocked out in 13\ seconds on Dec. 12, 2015, is the new interim featherweight title holder. He will face the winner of the Max Holloway-Anthony Pettis bout, which is now the main event at Air Canada Centre on Dec. 10.
While McGregor said he wanted to keep both belts, UFC president Dana White made it clear even before UFC 205 that McGregor would eventually have to give up one of the titles so that one of the divisions would not be held up.
