The American League will once again be represented by the likes of Detroit Tigers’ first baseman Miguel Cabrera, Los Angeles Angels’ center fielder Mike Trout and Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz as Major League Baseball has announced the 2016 Silver Slugger Award winners.
Cabrera has won his seventh Silver Slugger Award at first base, which is the most among all of the recipients this year. However, Trout, who is only 25 years old, has already won the fifth consecutive Silver Slugger Award of his big league career.
This was Cabrera’s fifth silver slugger in the American League and as a member of the Tigers. He also won the award twice in the National League with the then Florida Marlins. Cabrera slashed .316/.393/.563 with 38 home runs, 108 RBI and 92 runs scored this season.
Trout hit .315/.441/.550 with 29 home runs, 100 RBI, 123 runs scored and 30 stolen bases. He is also an American League MVP candidate, and if he wins, he would tie Cabrera with two such awards. “Miggy” beat out Trout for the American League honors in both 2012 and 2013 while Trout won it in 2014.
On the other hand, Ortiz had the best season ever for anyone playing at the age of 40. In his final year, he hit .315/.401/.620 with 38 home runs, 127 RBI and 79 runs scored.
Other 2016 American League Silver Slugger Award winners, who have received the award before, include Houston Astros’ second baseman Jose Altuve, Toronto Blue Jays’ third baseman Josh Donaldson and Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Altuve won for the third straight year and is probably Trout’s biggest competition for the MVP Award this year. This was Donaldson’s, who won the 2015 American League MVP, and Bogaerts’ second straight year on the heralded list.
First time winners in the American League were Kansas City Royals’ catcher Salvador Perez, Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts and Baltimore Orioles’ outfielder Mark Trumbo.
In the National League, Colorado Rockies’ third baseman Nolan Arenado is the only repeat winner. He hit .294/.362/.570 with a league-leading 41 home runs, 133 RBI and 116 runs scored in 2016. This was notably his second straight year with at least 40 long balls as well.
The other winners – all of which are first-time recipients – include Washington Nationals’ catcher Wilson Ramos, Chicago Cubs’ first baseman Anthony Rizzo, Nationals’ second baseman Daniel Murphy, Los Angeles Dodgers’ shortstop Corey Seager, Rockies’ center fielder Charlie Blackmon, Miami Marlins’ outfielder Christian Yelich and New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.
Cubs’ starting pitcher Jake Arrieta was also honored on behalf of the National League.
