The Indians officially declined Coco Crisp‘s $13 million option for 2017 on Sunday, per a team announcement. The move was expected, as Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com first announced on Friday. Crisp will receive a $750,000 buyout before hitting free agency on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old outfielder was dealt to the Indians in August for Athletics’ left-hander Colt Hynes. He batted .231/.302/.397 in 498 PA between the two clubs, putting up 13 home runs and 55 RBI and hitting a career-low mark with 10 stolen bases, the fewest he’s nabbed in a full major league season to date.
Crisp’s declining numbers and veteran status left him on the bench for the bulk of his season with the Athletics, a strategy he believed was intentional so the team could prevent his option from vesting in 2017. He finished the year with 122 regular season appearances and returned in the postseason with a .269 average and three home runs during the Indians’ World Series run.
