Georgia’s legendary running back Herschel Walker has political ambitions.
Walker told TMZ that he’d like to be on the staff of President-elect Donald Trump.
Walker and Trump are good friends and Walker thinks he’d fit in as the head of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, a post currently held by Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes.
Walker was a three-time consensus All-American at Georgia and won the Heisman Trophy in 1982. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
“There’s no doubt I’d be willing to help,” Walker said. “I want this country to continue being the best country in the world. I’m tired of people taking advantage of this country. I’m tired of people not realizing that this is the best country in the world.”
Walker also said people in public office, though he declined to name names, have been calling him trying to get him to hook them up with Trump.
“You never think that somebody you have known or as close as I’ve known that family is going to be President of the United States,” Walker said. “You know, that’s big time. Now, it’s not like I can call him up on the phone. … Now I have to go through so much security and my thing is I may not even get an invite to the inauguration.”
Walker met Trump after he left Georgia following his junior season and signed a contract with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League. The Generals were owned by Oklahoma oil tycoon J. Walter Duncan, who sold the team to Trump after the 1983 season. Walker played three seasons with the Generals and won the USFL rushing title in 1983 and 1985.
Walker was then drafted in 1985 by the Dallas Cowboys. Walker played 12 seasons in the NFL and remains the only player to gain 4,000 yards by rushing, receiving and kickoff returns. He’s also one of just six NFL players to have 60 touchdowns rushing and 20 touchdowns receiving.
