Former Colorado Avalanche skater Marek Svatos passes away at 34

Sad news in the hockey world as former Colorado Avalanche forward Marek Svatos has passed away at the age of the 34.

Drafted 227th overall in 2001, Svatos quickly made a name for himself as a rookie in 2005-2006, scoring 32 goals and 50 points in 61 games. Svatos had trouble matching the production throughout his NHL career, as he was hampered with groin and ACL injuries which prevented him from ever suiting up over a full season. After a one-year stint in the KHL in 2010-2011, Svatos returned to the NHL with the St. Louis Blues but was subsequently claimed by the Nashville Predators. After a nine-game stint with the team, Svatos was waived and last played 19 games with the Ottawa Senators before suffering a season-ending concussion.
After failing to stick on a PTO with the Panthers, Svatos played for HC Kosice in the KHL. He hasn’t played pro hockey since 2013-14.
Svatos finished his NHL career with 100 goals in just 344 career games. His production was impressive considering his limited run in the league, but was severely hampered by multiple injuries.
The cause of death is currently unknown. Our thoughts go out to Svatos family and the Avalanche organization and fan base.
