Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan, who is quickly earning a reputation as an aggressive (if not dirty) player in the NFL, was ejected in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers after making contact with an official.
Lewan was irritated with Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion, who was guilty of encroachment and hit Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota on a play that was whistled dead. After the play, Lewan got in Guion’s face and shoved him. When back judge Steve Freeman tried to intervene, Lewan shoved him out of the way and was immediately flagged and then tossed from the game.
Whether Lewan knew he was shoving an official is immaterial; that’s an automatic ejection. Also …
Fine for Lewan will be $30,387. #GBvsTEN— Mike Pereira (@MikePereira) November 13, 2016
Guion was called for encroachment, which was declined, and unnecessary roughness, which was accepted. But it was offset with Lewan’s 15-yard penalty, and the Titans lost their left tackle for the remainder of the game.
Lewan faced the music in the locker room with reporters, showing remorse for getting booted but saying, “I will never let someone take a free shot on Marcus Mariota.”

Lewan was replaced by backup Dennis Kelly, who was acquired in the Dorial Green-Beckham trade. But the ejection didn’t slow down the Titans, who took a 14-0 lead over the Packers shortly after Lewan was booted. The Titans stunningly would make it 21-0 shortly thereafter, en route to a 47-25 victory.
