The Los Angeles Kings have labeled Jonathan Quick as week-to-week with an injury suffered in the first period of their opening night loss to the San Jose Sharks.
According to one report, it’ll be more than a few weeks before we see Quick again. Maybe several. Potentially a dozen.
Daren Millard of Sportsnet reports that Quick has a “bad groin injury” and that “surgery is a real possibility.” Millard reports that the Kings are looking at “three to four months without their No. 1 goalie.”
Ouch.
This puts the Kings in the hands of goalies Jeff Zatkoff, formerly of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Peter Budaj, who was called up from the American Hockey League. At least for the moment.
GM Dean Lombardi spoke in vague terms about Quick’s injury on Friday. From Jon Rosen:
The injury, per Lombardi, is in the “same area” as the groin, generally speaking. The location wasn’t pinpointed – it’s not necessarily the groin, and in fact sounded as if it was in an area near the groin – but Lombardi said that it wasn’t a knee injury. One thing that was apparent was that the team will do everything to make sure that Quick, who is in the prime of his career and carries a $5.8-million cap hit through 2023, will not be rushed back.
The long-term health of the goaltender is paramount, given what Lombardi shared with reporters.
Yeah, no need to rush him back in attempt to steady a season that’s suddenly in peril. Ask the Canadiens about that.
