Cam Newton’s on the sidelines, and the reigning NFC champion Carolina Panthers are in free-fall. These two facts are not unconnected.
Newton took a shot to the head two weeks ago while loping into the end zone against the Falcons, and missed last week’s game against Tampa Bay with concussion symptoms. The Panthers lost both those games, and two others, and now sit in dead freaking last in the same division they owned just a year ago. Derek Anderson is capable enough, but he, like everyone else in the league, is not the reigning MVP.
Newton took it easy earlier this week, but according to the Charlotte Observer, practiced in limited action Wednesday and full-tilt on Thursday. While he still must undergo evaluation by an independent neurologist, all signs apparently point to Newton’s return this weekend against New Orleans.
“So far,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said, Newton is on track to play this weekend. Newton didn’t speak to the media himself, but when asked how he is feeling, grasped his head and groaned in mock agony. At least, Panthers fans have to hope it’s mock agony, as Carolina is out of time to lose more than one or two games the rest of the season and still keep playoff hopes alive
