Robin Ventura resigns as manager of the White Sox

Update (6:23 PM EDT): It’s official. Ventura has stepped down as manager of the White Sox, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.

Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports reports that the White Sox will meet with manager Robin Ventura on Sunday evening. Ventura intends to resign, but the White Sox will try to change his mind. Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Saturday that the two sides are likely to end things amicably, and the White Sox intend to hire bench coach Rick Renteria as the new manager on Monday.

The White Sox enter the final day of the regular season with a 78-83 record, a disappointing finish considering the club jumped out to a 23-10 record by mid-May. That was on the heels of an offseason in which the club brought in Todd Frazier then acquired James Shields in early June.

Under Ventura’s leadership, the White Sox went 375-434 (.463) which included a second-place finish in 2012 followed by a fifth-place finish and three fourth-place finishes. The White Sox have now gone eight seasons without making the postseason.

Renteria had been a coach in the Padres’ organization since 2003 and was promoted to bench coach in 2011. He left after the 2013 season. Renteria has one year of managing under his belt, leading the Cubs to a 73-89 fifth-place finish in 2014. The White Sox hired him as a bench coach ahead of the 2016 season.
