Ex-TCU QB Trevone Boykin looking for NFL chance after arrest

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall, File)Trevone Boykin’s standout TCU career came to a disappointing end earlier this month, and now, with his eyes set on the NFL, he hopes to regain his good name.
Instead of finishing out his career with the Horned Frogs against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl, Boykin, the team’s star quarterback, was suspended following a Dec. 31 arrest for allegedly striking a police officer following a fight at a San Antonio bar. Boykin watched from home as backup Bram Kohlhausen led the team back from a 31-0 deficit to shock the Ducks 47-41 two days later.
Boykin told ESPN.com he “cried tears of joy” watching Kohlhausen lead the Horned Frogs to the improbable win. Now facing a third-degree assault charge, Boykin is out to prove to NFL evaluators that his arrest does not reflect his true character.
From ESPN.com:
He got started last week at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in California, the first step in a process toward proving his talents and who he really is all over again.
Boykin is looking forward to sitting down with NFL decision-makers over the next few months and telling his story. He’s ready to own his mistake and show he's grown from his Jan. 1 arrest for allegedly striking an officer after fighting at a bar.
“You can’t let that stop you. It’s something I’m trying to move forward and be positive about and learn from my mistakes,” Boykin said. “Now it’s about not making any more mistakes and moving past it and being positive, admit that I was wrong, take full responsibility for me being wrong and hopefully a team will give me a chance.”
Boykin threw for 10,728 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while rushing for 2,049 yards and 27 scores during his TCU career. He also saw time at receiver as a sophomore in 2013, hauling in 26 passes for 204 yards. That’s the position where many scouts have him pegged at the next level, but Boykin wants to show that he can be an NFL-caliber quarterback.
“The first thing the scouts ask me is what do I want to do. I look at them straight in the eyes and tell them I want to play quarterback in this league,” Boykin told ESPN. “I want to prove to the scout, the GM, the head coach, the owner, the team that I can come in and make an impact playing quarterback in this league.”
To continue toward the goal of hearing his name called during April's NFL draft, Boykin has relocated to IMG Academy in Florida to train. But beyond his skills on the field, it's his reputation that also needs mending. His invitation to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl was the first step.
“I was super excited to have the opportunity to show my skills and not let one mistake tarnish everything I’ve been doing these past four, five years at TCU,” Boykin said.
