It has been a big week for Travis Kelce.
He went to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. It was announced that he'll be the star of a reality dating show. And on Friday the Kansas City Chiefs dumped a ton of money on him.
Becoming the second highest-paid tight end in NFL history likely can't beat the reality dating show thing, but it's not a bad second place.
Kelce's deal is for five years and worth $46 million, with a max value of $50 million according to the Kansas City Star. There is $20.2 million in guaranteed money involved. He trails only Rob Gronkowski, whose $54 million deal with the New England Patriots eclipses Kelce's new extension. Jimmy Graham signed a four-year, $40 million deal with the New Orleans Saints in 2014 (he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks last year), and that's the most per year for a tight end. Kelce's $9.2 million per year is tied for second among tight ends with Julius Thomas of the Jacksonville Jaguars according to Spotrac. So either way you want to slice it, Kelce's contract ranks second, tied with Thomas.
Kelce has 139 catches for 1,737 yards and 10 touchdowns the last two years. He doesn't put up the total numbers of some other tight ends, but the Chiefs don't rely on the passing game as much as other teams. Kelce is a great weapon for when the Chiefs do throw, as a fast tight end that is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Now the 26-year-old has a $46 million contract.
The least he can do is pay for those dates on his reality show.
