Jim Harbaugh got to wear No. 4 again on Wednesday.
Harbaugh coached first base for the Deroit Tigers in a split-squad game Wednesday afternoon vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates and donned the number he wore during his football playing career.
As you likely know, this wasn't the first time Harbaugh has gotten to coach first base in a spring training game. He was a first base coach for the A's in 2015 and also wore No. 4. And also went with the mid-calf baseball pants look. It's a bit surprising, because you'd expect someone who attacks each day with enthusiasm unknwn to mankind would be fully committed to the high socks look.
Before the game, Harbaugh met with Pirates manager Clint Hurdle, who spoke to the Michigan football team. The team is in Florida because of Harbaugh's much-talked about spring break practices in Florida.
The coach had a very simple goal for his stint in at first base on Wednesday.
“Hope to get a chance to send a runner and be right,” Harbaugh said via the Detroit News. “I don’t want anybody picked off at first base, that’s my main concern is having nobody picked off at first base and secondly, don’t get hit by a line drive, personally.”
