Demaryius Thomas might be embroiled in a contract standoff, but he received some terrific news on Monday.
President Barack Obama cut the prison sentences of 46 non-violent drug offenders on Monday, one of whom was Thomas' mother. Katrina Smith was arrested in 1999 (along with Thomas' grandmother) and began serving a 20-year sentence — his grandmother received a life sentence — for cocaine distribution when Thomas was 11 years old. (h/t For The Win)
Smith has never seen Thomas play in person, although she watched him lose Super Bowl XLVIII to the Seattle Seahawks because of a special arrangement allowed at the time by the federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida.
Now her sentence, which had been set to run through 2017, will expire on Nov. 10, 2015. Obama wrote a personal letter to each of the 46 people to notify them of their commutations.
Thomas wrote on his Facebook page to express his joy at the news.
The first game Smith will be able to watch her son play in person is the Week 15 contest in Denver against the Kansas City Chiefs.
"These men and women were not hardened criminals," Obama said in a video released by the White House.
And now one of them can go on being a proud mother again. And a free one.
