Aramis Ramirez is headed back to where it all began.
The veteran third baseman was traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday afternoon, joining the Buccos for their stretch run.
Pittsburgh is reportedly sending 23-year-old minor league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios to Milwaukee and paying $3 million of the $5.47 million remaining on Ramirez's 2015 contract:
Ramirez, 37, signed with the Pirates out of the Dominican Republic in 1994 and spent six years in Pittsburgh before the famous trade to the Cubs in the 2003 season.
Ramirez - who was 25 at the time - was sent to the Cubs along with veteran Kenny Lofton and helped the North Siders to within five outs of the World Series in that 2003 campaign.
Ramirez spent nine years with the Cubs, hitting .294 with 239 homers and an .887 OPS in Chicago.
He figures to man third base for the Pirates while Josh Harrison is on the disabled list with a thumb injury. Even when Harrison returns, Ramirez could stick at third at least part-time, as Harrison is versatile enough to play all over the diamond.
Ramirez adds a veteran bat in the middle of the Pirates order as they look to chase down the St. Louis Cardinals and hold off the Cubs in the ultra-competitive NL Central.
