Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough suffered a broken bone in his lower right leg during Monday’s College Football Playoff National Championship loss to Clemson.
“Bo Scarbrough suffered a fracture to his right lower leg during the game,” coach Nick Saban said. “The injury is non-surgical and we anticipate he will make a full recovery.”
Scarbrough, who had been the Tide’s most effective offensive playmaker throughout the game, was dragged down from behind during a tackle late in the third quarter and was helped off the field. To that point, Scarbrough had rushed 16 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns, and he was sorely missed down the stretch of the game as Alabama attempted to keep the clock moving.
“He’s certainly been a bell cow for us, and he has certainly, because of his size and durability, he makes it difficult when the defense gets worn down a little bit,” Saban said of Scarbrough. “Not to have him was probably a little bit of a disadvantage for us, but I was pleased with the way the other backs that had an opportunity in the game, Josh Jacobs and Damien Harris played. We always miss a guy that’s Bo Scarbrough, size, especially when you want to run the ball and take some time off the clock.”
Scarbrough, who had been inconsistent and injury-riddled during the bulk of the season, became one of the Tide’s best weapons late in the year. He didn’t rush for fewer than 90 yards in any of the Tide’s final four games, including 180 yards against Washington in the CFP semifinal, and six touchdowns during that span.
