Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was diagnosed with a “slight ligament tear” in his left thumb last week and today the team announced that he will miss the reminder of the regular season.
Initially he was expected to be shut down for 5-7 days, but the odds of Molina coming back to play a regular season game were always slim and he’s no sure thing to be available in the playoffs either.
Tony Cruz is filling in for as the Cardinals’ primary catcher and his lifetime .217 batting average and .560 OPS make Molina’s underwhelming offensive production this season–.270 batting average, four homers, .660 OPS–look Ruthian by comparison.
