One punch has changed so much.
After watching Ryan Fitzpatrick lead his team to its second win in as many games, first-year New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that Fitzpatrick will remain as starting quarterback even after Geno Smith returns from his broken jaw.
On Aug. 11, then-Jets linebacker IK Enemkapali punched Smith in the locker room, reportedly over a $600 debt Smith owed his teammate. Smith needed surgery on his broken jaw, the Jets needed veteran journeyman Fitzpatrick to take over the offense, and he has done just that.
Fitzpatrick never has been and won't ever be spectacular, but he's steady, and with a defense as strong as the Jets' could be, that's all they need. The 32-year old is 37-for-68 for 423 yards in New York's first two games, with two touchdowns and an interception in each game.
New York is Fitzpatrick's sixth team, and he's started multiple games for every one.
Smith broke his silence about the incident with Enemkpali last week, saying he is "extremely pissed" he lost the starting job because of the punch, not because of his play. This is his third season, and was looked at as a potential make-or-break year for the 2013 second-round pick.
After Tuesday's news, not only has Smith lost his job in New York, he may be hard-pressed to become a starter with another team in the future.
