The girlfriend and mother of suspended Rutgers WR Leonte Carroo have been charged by Rutgers police for their roles in an incident after the team's game against Washington State in Week 2.
Carroo was suspended by the team following the incident after he allegedly slammed a woman to the ground. The woman, 21 and a former Rutgers athletics ambassador, was formerly involved in a relationship with Carroo. His mother and girlfriend were also part of the incident.
From MyCentralJersey.com:
Lavern Carroo, 41, from Edison, and Maria Vega, 20, from Fort Lee, were two of three people charged. Juan Vega, 52 from Fort Lee, were charged today by the RUPD for simple assault and disorderly conduct, Rutgers police said.
Actions of those charged included general fighting behavior, specifically hair pulling and striking a victim in the face with a hand, police said.
Less than an hour after a football game ended, Carroo reportedly intervened in a confrontation between his girlfriend and a woman with whom he previously was romantically involved, who at that time worked for Rutgers athletics as a recruiting ambassador. Gannett New Jersey confirmed those reports.
Carroo, an All-Big Ten selection in 2014, has been charged with simple assault and domestic violence. The site said the investigation into the incident by Rutgers police is still ongoing. Carroo has pled not guilty.
The alleged victim told NorthJersey.com that she remembers being slammed to the ground by Carroo.
After hitting the ground, she said, she believes she blacked out for about 10 seconds. “When I looked up, I had a crowd of about 15 people around me. One girl was hitting me with a [traffic] cone,” she said.
“I have never been so scared,” she said.
Rutgers coach Kyle Flood is currently suspended three games for violating protocol by emailing a faculty member to inquire about the grades of a football player. The player is no longer on the team after he was dismissed following assault allegations from an April incident.
Carroo had 55 catches for 1,086 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2014. He was suspended for the first half of the team's opening game against Norfolk State for a curfew violation and has seven catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns in 2015.
