Saint Joseph's senior Papa Ndao and his teammates were up by 20 points on VCU in the A-10 Conference championship game Sunday with 8 minutes, 32 seconds remaining. It's not typically a scenario where you see a player on the leading team get fired up and ejected.
Ndao was angered by a foul call against him as he was defending VCU in the lane. With his teammates around him trying to calm him down, Ndao said something to the official who called the foul and he was immediately issued a technical foul. On his way to the bench, he said something else and was tossed.
The Hawks went on to win 87-74 despite the bizarre sequence.
Ndao's meltdown seemed to stun his teammates and coaches while having the opposite effect on VCU. The Rams began to make a run, trimming the lead to seven points before Saint Joseph's regrouped and won the game. Ndao scored two points and grabbed two rebounds in the game. He is not in danger of missing the NCAA tournament opener because of the outburst unless Saint Joseph's chose to discipline him in that way.
Saint Joseph's put to rest any questions about its resume this week by winning the championship behind a 30-point outing from DeAndre Bembry and 26 from Isaiah Miles.
Saint Joseph's and VCU are both expected to be in the NCAA tournament field when it is announced later today.
