Following the news that Tyrod Taylor had surgery to repair some core muscle/groin muscles, the Buffalo Bills immediately attempted to save face by claiming they knew of this operation. Well folks, I got some bad news for you if you believe team’s always tell the truth. In an attempt to make this not seem like a big deal, the Bills most likely lied to us all.
However, there is no way that the team would have knowingly allowed Taylor to go through with this move. They wouldn’t have. They shouldn’t have. They couldn’t have. With a return time table in the neighborhood of six-to-eight weeks, Taylor’s surgery should be fully healed by the beginning of March if Taylor goes through with all the rehab needed.
That said, Taylor needs to pass a physical by March 12th for the Bills to potentially cut him and save $27.5 million. With this surgery now happening, it is time for the sweating to begin in Buffalo. If Taylor does not recover as fast as expected or does not go through with the needed rehab, there is a chance that he could Taylor may fail his physicals.
Such a failure would make the Bills pay Taylor his $27.5 million that he is due for his 2017 deal. Overall, Buffalo are caught between a rock and a hard place at the current moment. Cutting an unhealthy Taylor would result in a fight with the players union while forcing Taylor through as a pass in his physical could result in a massive legal fight.
While it is unlikely that Taylor will take more than ten weeks to heal from his surgery and pass a physical, the potential of it all is almost like Taylor intentionally flipped the bird at the Bills. Getting the surgery now and creating the potential for a massive $27.5 million showdown could be Taylor’s way of getting back at the Bills for his Week 17 benching.
Overall, this relationship is headed for a rough ending. The Bills must find a way to cut Tyrod before March 12th. Taylor is making that job as hard as it can be. At this stage, I’m ready to assume that neither party will be in a mood to talk much during this offseason, likely ending Tyrod Taylor’s tenure in Buffalo.
