Derrick Rose went AWOL from the Knicks before Monday night’s game, and in the search for a valid explanation for the bizarre turn of events comes this nugget out of Chicago, the point guard’s hometown:
He’s homesick.
Rose’s 4-year-old son, P.J., lives in Chicago. K.C. Johnson, a Chicago Tribune beat writer who covered Rose for many years with the Bulls, reported the parental separation is “weighing very heavily” on Rose.
Multiple reports late Monday sympathetically suggested Rose was dealing with an amorphous family or personal matter and may have returned to Chicago. It was hours before Knicks staff — or teammate Joakim Noah — could reach him and confirm he was safe.
Rose was seen at the Knicks facility Tuesday talking with general manager Steve Mills and preparing to take the court for practice, according to ESPN.
There’s also an undercurrent of tension between Rose and Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek, who last week was critical of Rose’s inability to get to the free-throw line and then left the free-agent-to-be on the bench for a fourth-quarter comeback against the Bucks.
Rose, 28, was a defendant in an October civil trial in which he was accused of gang-raping an ex-girlfriend in Los Angeles who said she was too drunk to consent. Rose was cleared of all claims.
