Gael Monfils crushes fellow Frenchman to reach U.S. Open semis

Gael Monfils is known for his showmanship, but it’s been all business for the Frenchman in New York.
Tuesday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Monfils recorded his fourth consecutive straight-set victory to advance to the US Open semifinals.
Monfils’ latest victim was countryman, Lucas Pouille, who was coming off of a grueling win over Rafael Nadal.
Sunday’s five-set marathon clearly took its toll on the 22-year-old, who simply didn’t have the legs to keep up with the well-rested Monfils. The 10th seed won nearly 90 percent of his first-serve points and never faced a break point in the 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win.
Monfils’ victory makes him just the third Frenchman in the Open Era to reach the US Open semifinals. Up next, he’ll play the winner of fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
