The veteran outfielder was acquired for minor-leaguer Arismendy Alcantara, who was hitting .264 with nine doubles and five triples at Triple-A Iowa, converting all 21 of his steal attempts.
Coghlan, who was part of the Cubs’ playoff run last year, was dealt to the A’s for right-hander Aaron Brooks on Feb. 25 to make room for the surprise re-signing of Dexter Fowler. He makes $4.8 million. But Coghlan didn’t hit in Oakland, batting .146 in 51 games and quickly falling out of favor.
With Tommy La Stella headed to the disabled list Friday with a sore right hamstring, the Cubs needed another left-handed bat off the bench and to spell rookie Albert Almora. Coghlan hit 16 home runs last year in a part-time role.
Jorge Soler is on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain, and isn’t expected to be ready when his DL time is up. Alcantara’s star had fallen in the Cubs organization, and though he’s only 24 they opted to give him up for a four-month rental. The hope is Coghlan, 31 this month, can return to form before he becomes a free agent.
Peralta signed: The Cubs signed veteran free-agent reliever Joel Peralta, 40, pending a physical. Peralta’s most productive seasons were with the Rays under Cubs manager Joe Maddon from 2011-14. He will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa. The Mariners released him June 2.
